GLAZE: A Gaze-Language Benchmark for Grounding Human Gaze on Web User Interfaces

We introduce a gaze-language benchmark for web user interfaces and conduct comprehensive evaluation on state-of-the-art MLLM’s performance on gaze comprehension, providing empirical guidance on more effective utilization of gaze signals.

摘要

Eye gaze offers multimodal language models a grounding signal for understanding user interfaces, such as inferring which element a user intends to interact with. But natural gaze on dense interfaces rarely lands on a single element box or semantic group. Users scan between distant regions and revisit earlier elements, and their attention often spreads across different parts of the layout. Existing research either studies UI eye tracking without aligned language supervision or uses gaze to guide models in natural image and egocentric settings. We introduce GLAZE, the first benchmark for gaze-language grounding on web user interfaces. GLAZE is built from a think-aloud study in which 27 participants described real-world webpages while an eye tracker recorded their gaze. The dataset pairs more than 10,000 UI elements across 176 webpages with time-aligned gaze and verbal descriptions. The benchmark provides a model with a screenshot and a gaze visualization and evaluates whether it can identify the interface content or function the user is focusing on. We evaluate seven open and proprietary multimodal language models across five gaze visualizations. Current models often identify the general region being viewed but miss the precise attended elements and their function. Heatmaps and scanpaths are most effective for different UI element types, yet overall performance remains limited across visualization methods. Our benchmark can be useful for future research on UI agents, gaze-based accessibility tools, and automated interface usability analysis.

TEMPURA improves fine-grained temporal grounding and causal reasoning in videos through masked event prediction and dense event segmentation, trained on our video dataset (VER) with structured temporal annotations.

摘要

Understanding causal event relationships and achieving fine-grained temporal grounding in videos remain challenging for vision-language models (VLMs). We propose TEMPURA (Temporal Event Masked Prediction and Understanding for Reasoning in Action), a two-stage training framework that enhances the video temporal understanding of VLMs. Inspired by infilling techniques in language modeling, TEMPURA first performs masked event prediction, learning to reconstruct missing events and generate step-by-step causal explanations from dense event annotations. It then learns video segmentation and dense captioning, decomposing videos into non-overlapping events with detailed, timestamp-aligned descriptions. We train TEMPURA on VER, our large-scale dataset of 500K videos annotated with temporally aligned event descriptions and structured reasoning steps. Experiments on video temporal grounding and highlight detection benchmarks show that TEMPURA substantially improves strong base VLMs across model families and scales, confirming that combining event-level reasoning with fine-grained temporal segmentation is an effective recipe for video temporal understanding.
