The Art of Building Verifiers for Computer Use Agents

A best-in-class verifier for CUA trajectories that jointly evaluates process and outcome, attends to all screenshots, performs failure diagnosis, and reduces false positive rates from 20%+ to near zero.

摘要

Verifying the success of computer use agent (CUA) trajectories is a critical challenge: without reliable verification, neither evaluation nor training signal can be trusted. In this paper, we present lessons learned from building a best-in-class verifier for web tasks we call the Universal Verifier, and release CUAVerifierBench, a benchmark of high-quality human-annotated trajectories with $\textit{both}$ process and outcome labels. We design the Universal Verifier around four key principles: 1) constructing rubrics with meaningful, non-overlapping criteria to reduce noise; 2) separating process and outcome rewards that yield complementary signals, capturing cases where an agent follows the right steps but gets blocked or succeeds through an unexpected path; 3) distinguishing between controllable and uncontrollable failures scored via a cascading-error-free strategy for finer-grained failure understanding; and 4) a divide-and-conquer context management scheme that attends to all screenshots in a trajectory, improving reliability on longer task horizons. We validate these findings on CUAVerifierBench, showing that our Universal Verifier agrees with humans as often as humans agree with each other on both a process and outcome level. We report a reduction in false positive rates to near zero compared to baselines like WebVoyager ($\geq$ 45\%) and WebJudge ($\geq$ 22\%). We emphasize that these gains stem from the cumulative effect of the design choices above. We also find that an auto-research agent achieves 70\% of expert quality in 5\% of the time, but fails to discover all strategies required to replicate the Universal Verifier. We open-source our Universal Verifier system along with CUAVerifierBench.

MEMENTO: Teaching LLMs to Manage Their Context

Memento teaches reasoning LLMs to segment chain-of-thought into blocks, compress each into a summary, and mask completed blocks, while maintaining strong reasoning capabilities. We release OpenMementos (228K annotated traces).

摘要

Reasoning models think in long, unstructured streams with no mechanism for compressing or organizing their own intermediate state. We introduce MEMENTO: a method that teaches models to segment reasoning into blocks, compress each block into a \emph{memento}, i.e., a dense state summary, and reason forward by attending only to mementos, reducing context, KV cache, and compute. To train Memento models, we release OpenMementos, a public dataset of 228K reasoning traces derived from OpenThoughts-v3, segmented and annotated with intermediate summaries. We show that a two-stage SFT recipe on OpenMementos is effective across different model families (Qwen3, Phi-4, OLMo3) and scales (8B--32B parameters). Trained models maintain strong accuracy on math, science, and coding benchmarks while achieving ${\sim}2.5\times$ peak KV cache reduction. We extend vLLM to support our inference method, achieving up to $2\times$ throughput improvement while also enabling us to perform RL and further improve accuracy. Finally, we identify a \emph{dual information stream}: information from each reasoning block is carried both by the memento text and by the corresponding KV states, which retain implicit information from the original block. Removing this channel drops accuracy by 15pp on AIME24.
