DeepScholar-Bench: A Live Benchmark for Automated Evaluation of Generative Research Synthesis

We introduce DeepScholar-bench, a live benchmark for automated evaluation framework of generative research synthesis.

摘要

The ability to research and synthesize knowledge is central to human expertise and progress. A new class of AI systems—designed for generative research synthesis—aims to automate this process by retrieving information from the web and producing long-form, cited reports. Yet, evaluating such systems remains an open challenge: existing question-answering benchmarks focus on short, factual answers, while expert-curated datasets risk staleness and data contamination. Neither captures the complexity and evolving nature of real research synthesis tasks. We introduce DeepScholar-bench, a live benchmark and automated evaluation framework for generative research synthesis. DeepScholar-bench draws queries and human-written exemplars from recent, high-quality ArXiv papers and evaluates a real synthesis task: generating a related work section by retrieving, synthesizing, and citing prior work. Our automated framework holistically measures performance across three key dimensions—knowledge synthesis, retrieval quality, and verifiability. To further future work, we also contribute DeepScholar-ref, a simple, open-source reference pipeline, which is implemented on the LOTUS framework and provides a strong baseline. Using DeepScholar-bench, we systematically evaluate prior open-source systems, search agents with strong models, OpenAI’s DeepResearch, and DeepScholar-ref. We find DeepScholar-bench is far from saturated: no system surpasses a geometric mean of 31% across all metrics. These results highlight both the difficulty and importance of DeepScholar-bench as a foundation for advancing AI systems capable of generative research synthesis.

A Reproducibility Study of LLM-Based Query Reformulation

Amin Bigdeli · Radin Hamidi Rad · Hai Son Le · Mert Incesu · Negar Arabzadeh · Charles L. A. Clarke · Ebrahim Bagheri

摘要

Large Language Models (LLMs) are now widely used for query reformulation and expansion in Information Retrieval, with many studies reporting substantial effectiveness gains. However, these results are typically obtained under heterogeneous experimental conditions, making it difficult to assess wh...

摘要

Peer review is central to scientific decision-making, yet it is rarely evaluated or audited at scale. Growing submission volumes and the increasing use of large language models (LLMs) in drafting reviews have introduced new challenges for transparency, accountability, and quality control. Today,...

Query Performance Prediction Using Relevance Judgments Generated by Large Language Models

Chuan Meng · Negar Arabzadeh · Arian Askari · Mohammad Aliannejadi · Sebastian Schelter

摘要

Previous query performance prediction (QPP) methods typically return a single scalar value and do not require the predicted values to approximate a specific IR evaluation measure, leading to drawbacks: (i) a single scalar is insufficient to accurately represent different IR measures, especially w...

Can QPP Choose the Right Query variant? Evaluating Query Variant Selection for RAG Pipelines

Negar Arabzadeh · Andrew Drozdov · Michael Bendersky · Matei Zaharia

摘要

Large Language Models (LLMs) have made query reformulation ubiquitous in modern retrieval and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines, enabling the generation of multiple semantically equivalent query variants. However, executing the full pipeline for every reformulation is computationally...

摘要

Peer review is central to scientific publishing, yet reviewers frequently include claims that are subjective, rhetorical, or misaligned with the submitted work. Assessing whether review statements are factual and verifiable is crucial for fairness and accountability. At the scale of modern confer...

摘要

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used in scientific peer review, assisting with drafting, rewriting, and refinement. However, existing peer-review LLM detection methods largely treat authorship as a binary problem (human vs. AI) without accounting for the hybrid nature of modern revi...

Failing Forward: Understanding Query Failure in Retrieval, Judgment, and Generation

Seyed Mohammad Hosseini · Negar Arabzadeh · Mohammad Hossein Saliminabi · Dimitrios Androutsos · Morteza Zihayat · Ebrahim Bagheri

摘要

Modern information retrieval pipelines combine retrieval, LLM-based generation, and LLM-based judgment, and a poor outcome may originate in any of the three stages. Existing work studies these failures in isolation. This paper instead asks whether query difficulty itself transfers across the thre...
